Our Story
SSOCC is a not-for-profit that was founded to provide Reggio-inspired child care programs in Richmond and Vancouver, BC. We operate 4 programs for children ages 0-6 and 2 school-aged-care programs.
Who owns SSOCC? This is a question parents often ask us. SSOCC is a not-for-profit society, which means that there is no owner. Rather, there is a collaborative team of part time administrative staff and full time classroom managers that oversee daily operations in our programs. Our board of directors ensures responsible fiscal management and provides consultation and legal oversight for the society but does not manage daily operations. Our society is in good standing and annually meets all provincial and federal annual operational, reporting and auditing requirements.
Our board of directors
Our board of directors is a small group of child care operators, teachers and parents who believe strongly in the need for quality, inclusive, Reggio-inspired programs. Our board of directors ensures responsible fiscal management and provides consultation and legal oversight for the society but does not manager daily operations.
The board of directors can be reached at board@ssocc.ca.
Our Executive PAC and parent volunteers
As a group of parent participation programs, our parents are equally involved in the daily support operations and governance of our programs. Our Executive PAC provides guidance and recommendations on HR, policies, contracts and general program operations. Executive PAC and PAC meetings are held alternating months during the school year.
All of our parents complete a volunteer shift each month that contributes to the day to day operations of their child’s classroom. All parents with children in the SSOCC program are able to vote at our June AGM and are not required to sit on the Executive PAC to cast a vote.
Our staffing structure
As a small not-for-profit organization, each classroom has a Classroom Manager who is responsible for the curriculum, classroom management, staff hiring, supervision and mentorship and meeting all licensing standards. Within the classroom, there may be a variety of classroom teachers, practicum students or support aides, all of whom are supervised by the classroom manager. Classroom Manager email addresses are listed under each classroom using the drop down menu “Find a Centre”.
In terms of our administrative team, we have a part time Registrar, Randi, (responsible for registration, billing and ACCB), a part time Childcare Programs Manager, Zhaleh, (responsible for HR, all contracts and the PAC) and a Payroll/Accountant, Christine. Pamela is a Curriculum Consultant who provides limited support to managers on request, to help with classroom environment and curriculum.
As a recipient of the BC Gaming grant, we have been able to employ a part time Inclusion Coordinator who works with teachers and parents to create plans and interventions and to seek support funding for children requiring extra support. This position is subject to an annual renewal of the gaming grant every March.
