The whole day smells like ginger. We head downtown in the morning to see the gingerbread display — dozens of houses built by bakers and designers, each one different, with details children will spot that adults walk right past. Back at the studio after lunch, everyone builds their own: walls first, then the roof, then as much candy as the house can hold. Children take their houses home at the end of the day, with a warning about how fragile they are.

The shortest day of the year deserves a light. In the morning children build lanterns from scratch — folding, cutting, and layering paper so the light comes through in colours and patterns they choose. Then they roll their own beeswax candles, warming the sheets in their hands until the wax softens enough to shape. The studio smells like honey. In the afternoon we head outside to talk about why the days get short, how animals and plants handle the dark months, and what people have done for thousands of years when the light goes. Lanterns and candles come home together.

Note: We provide all materials. Children roll beeswax sheets by hand — no melted wax and no open flames in the studio.
Flour everywhere, and that's the point! The morning is spent baking — measuring, mixing, rolling, and cutting Christmas cookies, then decorating them once they've cooled. Children will bring home a small box of cookies. After lunch we settle in for a movie afternoon with blankets, low lights, and cookies to share. A slow, warm end to the day.
